2012 USTA Girls’ 16s & 18s Nationals

September 8th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

One month ago, in order to continue to feature more junior tennis on my site, I checked in on the USTA Girls’ 16s & 18s National Championships at the Barnes Family Tennis Center in San Diego, California.
At stake in these Championships is the title of National Champion, and with it a Wild Card entry into the main draw of the US Open Women’s Championships (for the 18s Champion) and a Wild Card into the US Open Junior Championships (for the 16s Champion).

As usual, there was so much going on that I couldn’t have possibly included everything that was happening in this video report. This is why I always encourage you to get out to these events, to choose for yourself the matches that you want to watch!

The results for the matches that I featured in this video report are:

GIRLS’ 18 SINGLES Semifinals (with seedings)
(17)Victoria Duval d. (7)Brooke Austin 6-4, 3-6, 6-4

(3)Alexandra Kiick d. (6)Chalena Scholl 6-3, 6-3

GIRLS’ 16 SINGLES Championship (with seedings)
(2)Kimberly Yee d. (6)Katerina Stewart 6-2, 6-2

GIRLS’ 18 DOUBLES Championship (with seedings)
(1)Samantha Crawford / Alexandra Kiick
d. (2)Chalena Scholl / Sachia Vickery 7-6(5), 6-3

Here is the result of the girls’ 18s final, which was played the next day:
GIRLS’ 18 SINGLES Championship (with seedings)
(17)Victoria Duval d. (3)Alexandra Kiick 3-6, 6-1, 6-0

FOLLOW-UP:
Since Victoria Duval won this event, she received a wildcard entry into the women’s main draw singles of the US Open. Her first round match was against Kim Clijsters. With a respectable showing, Duval lost the match, 6-3, 6-1, against the retiring veteran.
Duval then moved on to the US Open Junior tournament where she took out the number nine and three seeds, on her way to the semifinal round. In the semifinal round, Victoria lost to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit, 6-2, 7-6(4).

Alexandra Kiick was taken out in the first round of women’s main draw singles qualifying, 7-5, 6-4, in a tough battle with Bulgaria’s Dia Evtimova.
In the junior US Open singles, Kiick was taken out in the second round, 6-0, 6-7(4), 7-6(4), by the number twelve seed (who played Duval in the semis), Anett Kontaveit.

The doubles team of Alexandra Kiick / Samantha Crawford got their main draw entry into the US Open. In the first round, they were taken out by the more experienced team of Liga Dekmeijere and Mervana Jugic-Salkic in a tough three-setter: 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the US Open junior doubles, Kiick/Crawford were taken out, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round by the number eight seeds, Antonia Lottner and Kathinka Von Deichmann.

Samantha Crawford, however, made it all the way through some impressive opponents in the US Open women’s singles qualifying, including veterans Eleni Daniilidou and Tennis Friend, Marie-Eve Pelletier. In the first round of the women’s main draw, Crawford went down to Great Britain’s Laura Robson, 6-3, 7-6(8).
Samantha was playing a lot of tennis during this tournament, as she also made the main draw of the mixed doubles with partner, and Tennis Friend, Mitchell Krueger. They lost in the first round to the number six seeded team of Andrea Hlavackova and yet another Tennis Friend, Mahesh Bhupathi, 6-2, 6-4.
In the US Open juniors, Samantha Crawford made it into the semifinals of the girls’ singles after taking out the number eleven seed, as well as the number eight seed, Sachia Vickery. She battled through a tough semifinal, against the number four seeded German, Antonia Lottner, and made it to the finals with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.
The final for the US Open Girls’ Singles Championship took just over an hour as Crawford won 5 of 6 break points and fired off six aces to beat Anett Kontaveit 7-5, 6-3!

And, finally, Kimberly Yee, who is only fifteen years old, went down 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of junior US Open singles, to the number fourteen seed, Canada’s Carol Zhao. She also lost her first round of junior US Open doubles, however, it was not with the same partner that she won the National 16s Title with.

2012 Texas Tennis Open VIII

August 25th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

“Finals Day” at the Texas Tennis Open!

About a half an hour before the singles final began, Liga Dekmeijere and Irina Falconi were practicing on Stadium Court. When they left, Irina had four tennis balls in her hand and asked me if it was okay if she hit them up into the crowd. I whipped out my marker and said, “Only if you sign them first!”

That was such a nice, spur of the moment gesture for her to think of the fans like that. Good job Irina!

The final scores for the matches I featured are:

Roberta Vinci d. Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-3

Marina Erakovic / Heather Watson
d. Liga Dekmeijere / Irina Falconi 6-3, 6-0

2012 Texas Tennis Open VII

August 24th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

“Semifinal Day” is here at the Texas Tennis Open!

As I have been telling you, the finals are on Friday. Matches start at 7PM, so, make your plans to join me!

The final scores for the matches I featured are:

Roberta Vinci d. Bojana Jovanovski 6-0, 6-0
I think that Roberta nailed it on the head when she said that Bojana ” . . . didn’t play so well”. The match only lasted 53 minutes, and I was hard pressed to find any winning highlights from Jovanovski for the parts of the match that I was able to shoot.
I’m always surprised at the details that the players remember. When I mentioned last year’s match between these two, Roberta remembered that she was down in the second set, but came back to bring it to a third set win. That was 69 matches and tons of international travel ago! I can’t even remember my last league match and, as you know, I video them on my own website!

Liga Dekmeijere / Irina Falconi
d. Eugenie Bouchard / Aleksandra Wozniak 6-0, 4-6, [10-8]

An unbelievable see-saw match! Bouchard/Wozniak were up 3-0 in the second set, when Dekmeijere/Falconi came back to tie it up, and battle it out, then lose it. Then, in the third set tiebreak, Bouchard/Wozniak were up 5-0, and Dekmeijere/Falconi battled back, I believe, with the next six points in a row, getting up 6-5. At 9-6, Dekmeijere/Falconi, . . . Bouchard/Wozniak saved two match points before being eliminated.

2012 Texas Tennis Open VI

August 23rd, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s “Quarterfinal Day” here at the Texas Tennis Open!

The final scores for the matches I featured are:

Casey Dellacqua d. Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4, 6-4
Casey had mentioned that she has been coming back from her injuries. She had shoulder surgery in 2008, and foot surgery in 2010. Up until this tournament, she has only made it as far as three Round of 16 matches this year.

Jelena Jankovic d. Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-1
Sorana was playing very well at times, however, she did get at least one bad line call (I checked it on my video), and felt that she had much more than that. She actually stopped the match a couple of times to complain to the chair umpire, to no avail. The match was lost, mostly by Sorana’s errors, rather than won by the few winners by Jelena.

Bojana Jovnovski d. Peng Shuai 6-4, 1-0 (retired)
Peng’s injury was to her right shoulder. A disappointing retirement from the match, as she was having such a good week, and said that she was feeling fine in yesterday’s interview.

2012 Texas Tennis Open V

August 22nd, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

They say (yes, I have actually heard them say it), if you don’t like the weather in Texas . . . wait about an hour . . .

After withdrawing from the tournament with a shoulder injury, Angelique Kerber could easily have went on to new York. I thought that it showed a lot of class to hang around Dallas for a couple of days and meet with her fans.

The final scores for the matches I featured are:

Peng Shuai d. Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-2
I thought that it was interesting how Peng had explained that her dip in performance was from trying to switch to a longer racket. After that did not work for a while, she went back to her normal racket, and has performed better since.

Jelena Jankovic d. Arantxa Rus 7-6(5), 6-2
The last couple of matched for Jelena have benn interesting. They seem very close, but, she it counts, she can really “turn it on” and dominate. on the other hand, Arantxa gave her quite a match! I see big things in the near future for upcoming tennis star.

Sorana Cirstea d. Alize Cornet 6-1, 7-5
Alize struggled with her first serves, and felt that the lines were being called unfairly against her. There is not electronic line calling system at this tournament, so, you just have to go with what the linespeople and chair umpires say, and not let it get into your head.

Check out the line up on Stadium Court!

ORDER OF PLAY – WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2012
STADIUM start time 5:00 pm

Alexandra Wozniak vs Casey Dellacqua

Not Before 7:00 PM
Sorana Cirstea vs Jelena Jankovic
Bojana Jovanovski vs Peng Shuai

Plus, there’s singles and doubles filling up the two Grandstand courts!
