Hey Tennis Friends!

Today’s shot is from inside the media room that overlooks Stadium Court. The picture makes it seem a lot smaller than it actually is.

The Press Room

It’s a long room full of little desk cubbies that each have a TV on top. Some have stats, some have the current action on court, and some have the live feed from the post game interview room (that we rarely get to see in our sport). It’s pretty quiet, save for the interview audio, and the sound of many fingers lightly typing on their laptops.

This will be my final “LIVE” report from this event as I will become a patron tomorrow, and shouldn’t be bringing my laptop beyond the gates. I hope that you have enjoyed my reports from the 2008 Pacific Life Open!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open IX

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Here’s a picture of me with the real heroes of the tournament, the ball kids.

Ball Kids 2008 PLO

Most of you know, that is what I really want to be when I grow up! This photo was taken just before, what appears to be, my final match announcing on Stadium 2.

Today’s match just started and is a men’s doubles match: Richard Gasquet (No.8 singles player in the word) and Robert Lindstedt vs. number three seeds Daniel Nestor (No.4 doubles player) and Nenad Zimonic (No.10 doubles player) .

I was the chair umpire last week for a match with Gasquet/Lindstedt with the Fila/Tennis Warehouse Doubles Challenge winners.

After the match, when the players came up to the chair to shake my hand, Robert Lindstedt said to me, “You suck!” It was very refreshingly funny and good natured.

Nestor/Zimonic won today’s doubles match 7-5, 6-2.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open VIII

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s “experimental day” here at GroundsPass.net. Since I have to keep my laptop silent (along with cel phones and other electronic devices), I don’t know how this will turn out. I guess that instead of blindly trying this, it’s more like “deafly” trying this.

I am using the built-in camera on my MacBook along with iMovie to capture and send my intro that I just did for Tommy Haas. It is in the QuickTime format, so I hope that you can all open it.

I captured it, then edited it based on when the audio meters started and stopped fluctuating, so, my apologies if something gets cut off. I won’t be able to listen to this until late tonight, after my work is completed.

Hopefully it’s not too embarrassing. It’s ironic (being that I sometimes work as a cameraman) that another cameraman stepped in front of my shot at the end, . . . his name is Skippy, by the way . . .

Tommy defeated Andy Murray in three exciting sets 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Posing with Lars Graff

During the night tennis, I was showing chair umpire Lars Graff the capabilities of my MacBook between matches. Friendly as he is, he agreed to pose for a picture with me.

Lars was very professional, and helpful. He had assisted me with my pronunciation of some of the international cities in the bios that I had to read. Thanks Lars!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open VII

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

This morning as I was coming in through the media entrance, I ran in to my ol’ pal Bud Collins (see Davis Cup Finals ’07). He’s been doing a daily talk show out here on the Tennis Garden Village stage. I’ve been reading the promos for this, but haven’t been able to go hear his refreshingly irreverent take on the day’s events. After we went to our meetings, I stopped back in to the media room to snap this picture with him with my MacBook.

2008 Pacific Life Open VI

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Not necessarily tennis related, but I just wanted to share the wonderful view that I see each day when I leave for my duties.

Beautiful Day

Even on trash day it looks beautiful. This was taken around 9:00 this morning.

Palm trees, snow capped mountains in the distance, wonderful weather . . . and, I’m heading out to watch pro tennis! Pretty good gig, eh?

On the drive to work, and home, you can smell the spring blossoms. I swear it’s like having an air freshener outside!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

p.s. For those who are coming out, be sure to bring clothes for the extreme temps that we have been having, and don’t forget to ARRIVE EARLY!!! ( I cannot stress this enough . . . )
