2013 USTA Girls’ 16s & 18s Nationals

Saturday, August 10th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

Just two days ago, on Thursday, I checked in on the USTA Girls’ 16s & 18s National Hard Court Championships at the Barnes Family Tennis Center in San Diego, California. At stake at these Championships is the title of National Champion, and with it a Wild Card entry into the main draw of the US Open Women’s Championships for the 18s Champion in singles and doubles!

As usual, there was so much going on that I couldn’t have possibly included everything that was happening at the facility in this video report. This is why I always encourage you to get out to these events, to choose for yourself the matches that you want to watch!

The results for the matches that I featured in this video report are:

GIRLS’ 18 SINGLES Round of 16 (with seedings)
(1)Sachia Vickery d. (15)Spencer Liang 6-0, 6-2

Vickery, from Miramar, Florida, has played professional tennis tournaments in Mexico, France, Canada, and around the United States this year as she recently established a career high singles ranking of #230 on the WTA Tour.
Liang, from Potomac, Maryland, received the USTA Bill Talbert National Sportsmanship award at the International Hall of Fame Championships this year.

GIRLS’ 18 DOUBLES Quarterfinal (with seedings)
Kourtney Keegan / Rachel Pierson
d. (7)Brooke Austin / Madeline Lipp 6-1, 6-3

The unseeded team of Keegan/Pierson are both eighteen. Kourtney Keegan, from Roswell, Georgia, is a recent graduate of Blessed Trinity High School, in her hometown. Rachel Pierson, from Princeton, New Jersey, made the final round in doubles at the $10,000 ITF event in Austin, Texas last month.
The seventeen year old Austin, from Indianapolis, Indiana, was a semifinalist in singles at this event last year, as featured in my 2012 report from this event. Eighteen year old Madeline Lipp, from Lake Forest, Illinois, recently graduated from Lake Forest High School.

As of this posting, here are the semifinals of the girls’ 18s singles. The first is set to begin at 9:30am, and the second, not before 11:00am on Saturday:

Taylor Townsend v. Allie Kiick
Sachia Vickery v. Brooke Austin

In doubles, Keegan/Pierson came up against Tennis Friends Gabby Andrews and Taylor Townsend in the semifinal round. The 2012 Junior Australian Open winning team-up dispatched the challengers 6-0, 6-1. Townsend/Andrews are the number one seeds, and scheduled to play the final against Tennis Friends Sachia Vickery and Allie Kiick, the number two seeds, at 3:00pm on Saturday.
