2011: Billie Jean King Interview

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Hey Tennis Friends!

During this past World Team Tennis season, I included excerpts from an interview that I had with the legendary Billie Jean King.

In this report, I am including the expanded version of that interview, as it included Billie Jean’s insight into sports franchise ownership, the Royal Family at Wimbledon, and, even how our current Presidential Family embraces our sport!

Billie Jean King is knows her place in history, but, is refreshingly modest. When I had mentioned that I was slightly intimidated sitting so close to such a legend, she calmly said,
“Just think of me as a little public park kid from Long Beach. I’m a little eleven year old going ‘Which end of the racket do I hold?’ ”

Classic BJK!

The WTT season is over for 2011. Don’t miss out on next year’s season!

2011 WTT: Newport Beach Breakers V

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Hey Tennis Friends!

Once again, the World Team Tennis season is so brief, and concentrated, that I save some of my coverage to share throughout the summer and fall!

This WTT report is brand new! It’s just a little bit time-shifted, like watching something that you have saved on your DVR!

In this match, the Newport Beach Breakers took on the Sacramento Capitals, featuring their marquee players, Mark Knowles and Vania King!

UPDATES:
Just a couple of weeks after this event (which was held in July), Mark Knowles won his 54th ATP doubles title as he and his partner, Xavier Malisse, defeated Somdev Devvarman & Treat Conrad Huey 7-6(3), 7-6(10) in the Farmers Classic championship round in Los Angeles.

A month after this event, Vania King won her 13th doubles title, as she and her 2010 Wimbledon & US Open partner, Yaroslava Shvedova, defeated Natalie Grandin & Vladimira Uhlirova 6-4, 3-6, [11-9] for the championship at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

Following that win, King/Shvedova made it to the final of this year’s US Open, as well as the semifinals of Tokyo and Beijing.

The WTT season is over for 2011. Don’t miss out on next year’s season!

2011 WTT: Newport Beach Breakers IV

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

Hey Tennis Friends!

No, . . . it’s not time for summer re-runs, it’s just that the World Team Tennis season is so brief, that I have to give it some extra love, and spread it around through the summer and fall!

These WTT reports are brand new! They’re just a little bit time-shifted while I took a break to fit in the summer hard court season.

In this match, the Newport Beach Breakers took on the Kansas City Explorers, featuring their marquee players, Bob & Mike Bryan!

CORRECTION: It is actually Mike Bryan who is playing doubles with Kveta Peschke in the video, not Bob, as my introduction suggests.

Since the video of this report was recorded in July, here are their current stats:

Current Doubles Ranking: #1

Team Doubles Titles:
73
(All-time men’s doubles team record holders)

Bob’s Doubles Titles:
73
(Plus 2006 US Open Mixed Doubles Champion w/Martina Navratilova
& 2010 US Open Mixed Doubles Champion w/Liezel Huber)

Mike’s Doubles Titles:
75
(Additioanl titles in 2002 w/Mahesh Bhupathi and w/Mark Knowles)

The Bryan brothers have a few events coming up that will benefit their charitable organization The Bryan Bros. Foundation. Visit the link here to find out more details:
