2008 Pacific Life Open IV

March 15th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s not that glamorous from this end . . .

In the Tunnel

This is a shot that the players get to see from “the tunnel” that leads to center court. It pretty much looks like a bomb shelter, . . . without all of the graffiti. I had to set my MacBook down and run in front of the built-in camera to beat the three second timer!

For those of you who took advantage of my tickets, be sure to arrive early and have your guest stand in the Entrance line, while you stand in the Will Call line. The morning session lines have already started by the time I show up at 9:30AM at all gates.

Carlos Moya Signing

Here’s a shot of me handing the tennis balls and marker to Carlos Moya, after his three set win over Robby Ginepri 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

TV coverage started today on Fox Sports. My seat (when I am there) is behind the Chair Umpire, front row, three seats to their right. Not a lot of camera time, unless there is some action at the net.

Jalena Jankovic Signing Balls

Next up, Jelena Jankovic took out American Ahsha Rolle 6-0, 6-2. When I was having Jelena sign the tennis balls, the hand-held TV camera was right there, . . . cropping me out of the shot!!  Damn TV people 🙂

By the way, Day Session ended on Stadium 2 last night at 11:00PM. Not a bad day’s worth of tennis!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open III

March 14th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s a pretty great day out here on Stadium 2!

It is, however, a little windy, and there is quite the layer of grit on my MacBook! Seriously, it’s worse than being at the beach. Dirt and electronics don’t go together very well.

Announcing Marat Safin

Here’s a shot of Marat Safin warming up, with me on the court, and Carlos Bernardes in the chair. In the match preceding this one, his sister Dinara Safina had just beaten Jill Craybas 7-6,7-5. After Marat lost his match to Jurgen Melzer 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, Amelie Mauresmo came onto Stadium 2 and beat Elena Gallovits 6-2, 6-4.

Amelie on my Shoulder

Taken from my MacBook’s camera, the angel on my shoulder in this picture: Amelie Mauresmo.

This was the first day that they had me give the balls to the players to sign and hit into the stands. This was pretty exciting, as up to this point, I was instructed not to interact with the players. Inevitably, when handing three tennis balls to someone, your fingers will touch. I actually made contact with the pros!

Thanks to all who have come out to say “Hi!” so far. I look forward to seeing everyone else, too!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open II

March 13th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Long hours here at the microphone. I work from 9:30AM to . . . what is now 11:27PM. Not only do I do my regular court announcer duties, but I have homework as well. Most of the time I begin during the later matches. I get my assignments really late (around 6:30PM) and then have to do research and come up with bios for about fourteen players each night. I have to double, and sometimes, triple check my facts. It’s like being in college!

After it gets too cool on Stadium 2, I move somewhat indoors to the main stadium announcer booth to finish my “thesis”. I have a window wide open, so as not to feel too confined. It’s pretty quiet, save for the hum of the fans on the electronic equipment, and the scuffling of the maintenance crew doing their final cleaning of the stadium.

Booth Night View

Above is the view from my evening “office” taken from the built-in camera of my MacBook. I know that it is similar to yesterday’s pic, . . . I’ll try to do better tomorrow.

I didn’t mind working the long hours, but the parking situation was not very fun. As “employees” we parked in a remote lot way off behind the tournament. The problem is that the free shuttles end about one hour after final play. This meant that after I had completed my homework, I had to trudge what seemed to be a half mile in the dark to get to my truck. Fortunately, after mentioning this a couple of days later, I was given a pass for the closer parking.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open I

March 12th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

This was the scene this morning after our pre-show meeting from the announcer’s booth at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Inside the Booth

The main focus of the production meeting was the daily Stadium Court program. My part was to make sure that my introductions for Stadium 2 were proofread and approved. I had done all of my research and fact checking, and emailed my work the night before. In the morning, after our meeting, I was handed a stack of 5×7 cards that not only had the intros printed on them, but that day’s promotional spots on them as well.

Fantastic weather is forecast for the week, and there is certainly a buzz of tennis balls in the air. I will be on Stadium 2 until the final weekend. If you come out to the event (and, why shouldn’t you?), I will be sitting somewhere around the umpire’s chair, wearing my brand new Fila apparel.

The "Tennis Traveller" Hat

Yes, after about the first hour in the sun, I have to put my wacky hat on. I get so many comments about it’s uniqueness that I’m working on having my own limited product line!

Announcing Scoville Jenkins

The first match of the day this early in the tournament is not heavily attended. Plenty of great seats for everyone! That’s me on my first day reading the bio for American Scoville Jenkins, who is warming up in the background, with Lars Graff in the chair umpire’s seat.

Look for me on TV when coverage begins later in the week. I believe it will be carried on Fox Sports, so check your local listings, and, yes, I will have my big hat on!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Fed Cup Quarterfinal

February 5th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s Fed Cup Time!

That’s right! Country versus country via women’s tennis. This time I took a short hop down to La Jolla, California. The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club is a wonderful place to watch pro tennis. It’s right on the beach, and you can actually see the nearby surf from the upper levels of the temporary stadium. Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my camera, so I just have a couple of quick pics from my cel phone.

Liz & Me @ Fed Cup 2008

This is my friend Liz and I after we got our free face painting and pom poms. Of course, I’ve learned from my Davis Cup experiences, so I have the American flag draped around my neck. Liz and I met a couple of years ago when the United States Davis Cup team beat Romania at this same venue.

It was a tough weekend for the American Women, because of the German competition, and especially the rain delays. Sunday’s final matches had to be played on Monday!

2008 Fed Cup Team

This is my camera-phone self portrait with the winning American team of (left to right) Laura Granville, Lisa Raymond, Ashley Harkleroad, Lindsay Davenport, and team captain, Zina Garrison!

The Americans beat the Germans 4-1.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!
