2012 Farmers Classic

July 24th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s my first day of coverage of the main event at the Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz!

Here are the final scores from the matches that I featured, with their current ranking in parenthesis:

(#89) Igor Andreev d. (#114) Dudi Sela 7-6(4), 6-4

(#91) Paolo Lorenzi d. (#613) Bradley Klahn 6-4, 3-6, 6-0

It was great to see Klahn still battling his heart out, even when he was down 0-5 in the third, and match point. He refused to “play it safe” and really went for the lines! He saved five match points, and even had a break point! A great effort by the recent Stanford graduate!

2012 Farmers Classic Preview

July 21st, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

The Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz, qualifying began today!
I took a trip out to the Sycamore Courts at UCLA to check it out:

Here are the final scores from the matches that I featured with their current ATP World Tour rankings in parenthesis:

(#657) Bradley Klahn d. (#297) Ricardo Hocevar 6-2, 3-0 retired

(#558) Louk Sorensen d. (#154) Ricardo Mello 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-6(3)

Not only was Louk the first player representing Ireland to win a Grand Slam event main draw match in the Open Era (2010 Australian Open), his father, Sean, was the first Irishman to play a Grand Slam main draw match in the Open Era, going out in the first round of Wimbledon in 1977. (Matt Doyle reached the fourth round of the US Open in 1982, but played under the American flag then, only becoming an Irish citizen in 1985).

2012 Mercury Insurance Open Preview

July 15th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

Late last week, I dropped by the pre-qualifying tournament at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California to get a preview of the Mercury Insurance Open!

The pre-qualifying final featured in this report was from this past Thursday. The score was 1-2, with Jelena Durisic serving at 40-30 in the first set when the injury retirement occurred. Arianna Colffer has since said that her initial diagnosis is that she may have a torn ACL.

Yesterday, in the first round of qualifying, Jelena Durisic lost to Irena Pavlovic, from France, 6-4, 6-0, after saving one match point. Jelena said that she was nervous and tentative throughout the match, but she won points when she relaxed. In her estimation, her opponent was more experienced and handled the pressure better.

For tickets and more information on the Mercury Insurance Open
at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, CA, visit their web site here:
