2013 WTT: OC Breakers

July 11th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

The World Team Tennis regular season has begun. My local team in Southern California is the Orange Country Breakers.

In this featured match, the Breakers take on the Philadelphia Freedoms. Because of my emcee duties (which I announced last month), I am unable to get more comprehensive coverage, however, I am still able to get some highlights to entice you to come on down to see professional tennis LIVE!

The next match in this two-week season is this Saturday, July 13th, when the Breakers will take on Andy Roddick and the Springfield Lasers!

2013 US Open National Playoffs

June 16th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

The US Open National Qualifying Playoffs took place this week at The Claremont Club in Claremont, California. This is the Southern California section of the summer-long contest.
I stopped by on finals day to file this report:

CLARIFICATION:
In my introduction to Elizabeth Lumpkin I mentioned that she was a “Top 500 player”. I failed to specify that she has been rated as high as #443 on the WTA tour.

Here are the scores for the finals, whose winners will be moving on to the national level of this competition:

Men’s Singles
J.C. Aragone d. Mackenzie “Mackie” McDonald 6-4, 6-4
These two players were finalists in the Boys’ 18s doubles at this years’ Asics Easter Bowl.

Women’s Singles
Mayo Hibi d. Elizabeth Lumpkin 6-3, 6-1
Hibi has made the quarterfinal, or better, in singles in her last three ITF events, winning last week’s event in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Mixed Doubles
Mackie McDonald / Chanelle Van Nguyen
d. Dante Cipulli / Kaitlyn Christian 6-3, 7-6(4)

Both Dante Cipulli and Kaitlyn Christian made it to the quarterfinal in singles at this event.

BJK on Equal Work/Pay & WTT Announcement

June 4th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

The excitement and recurring controversy of this years’ French Open (or, pretty much any of the majors) reminded me of an interview that I had with tennis legend Billie Jean King, that I have not yet shared. In addition to the discussion, I have a very important announcement to make, as well . . .

2013 USTA Mixed League

May 25th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

Time to feature my favorite kind of USTA League play: The mixed doubles season! This winter I was able to team up with a new Tennis Friend, who recently moved into my area from out of state.

One of the positive things I was able to take away from this match, is that toward the end of the match I was able to save, at least, one match point against us!

Our first set lasted 42 minutes. Ten and a half minutes of that set, 25% of it, was the one long service game of Kelly’s, that I mentioned in the video.
Our second set lasted 51 minutes. I was misktaken in our post match interview. We had actually won that tiebreak 7-2 (not 7-3).
Our third set lasted 38 minutes.

My results for this season, so far, are:

Local District/Area 4.0 Doubles
1-wins, 0-losses

Woo hoo! Finally a whole number in the “Win” category!

2012 USTA Fall League VI

May 11th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s Spring Cleaning time here at GroundsPass.net. My USTA League reports are time delayed in favor of the daily and/or more timely reports promoting other events, so, from last November, here is my report from the final match of my 2012 USTA Fall League season.

One of the positive things I was able to take away from this match, is that toward the end of the match I was able to save, at least, one match point against us!

Our first set lasted 27 minutes.
Our second set lasted 30 minutes.

My final results for this season are:

Local District/Area 4.0 Doubles
0-wins, 6-losses

A losing season may not be something to brag about, but, we had some very competitive sets, including one three set match. I sure had fun playing and practicing with Javier, and introducing him to USTA League tennis.
