Hey Tennis Friends!
Yesterday, I dropped by the first day of the qualifying at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California to get a preview of the Southern California Open!
Women’s Qualifying Singles
Coco Vandeweghe d. Stephanie Hoffpauir 6-2, 6-3
Hoffpauir was the runner-up for the final of the pre-qualifying event, but was fortunate enough to receive a wild card for the qualifying despite the loss. Looking at the other Main Draw wild cards in this tournament, it’s a mystery to me why Coco was not granted one.
Maria Elena Camerin d. Elizabeth Lumpkin 6-3, 6-4
Lumpkin won the pre-qualifying final, yet was listed as a wild card for the qualifying draw. That’s an odd designation since she had to work hard, through four matches, to earn her way in.
