2008 East West Bank Classic IV

July 27th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

By now you know that everyday at this event is a ton of fun. Equally as entertaining are the happenings surrounding the match play. Today was my last day at the East West Bank Classic, so I’ll leave you with a taste of what happens off the court:

East West Bank Classic Promenade

The Tennis Village is a great place to walk around between matches. There are various tennis related booths from tennis vacation spots, to better fitness, to clothing and jewelry. It’s like going to a “tennis specific” mall!

East West Bank Classic Draw Board

The main draw board is always a good place to meet up if you get lost from your party. You can also track the results of your favorite player, and make plans for who you want to see the following day. I’ve met many people here just by discussing the days events and prognosticating the future results. Remember, at these events, you are surrounded by tennis fans. Plus, it’s a great photo spot!

East West Bank Classic Fireworks

The Saturday Night Fireworks Spectacular, presented by The Home Depot, was, . . . um, . . . well, . . . spectacular!

Next week the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters from Cincinnati.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 East West Bank Classic III

July 26th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

It was a great day for live tennis in Carson! Too many matches to recap them all, but here are some illustrative pictures:

Bethany Mattek and the Radar Gun

Here’s what it looks like from the front baseline row. In the foreground is the radar gun configuration that lets us know the speed of the serves. Despite the deceptive perspective in the picture, it’s actually only about the size of two fists. In the background is American Bethany Mattek taking on her Chinese rival in the quarterfinal, Meng Yuan. This was the come-from-behind match of the tournament, and, sadly, it wasn’t even televised!

In this afternoon’s match, Bethany won the first set 6-2, but was down 0-4 in the second set. Afterward, she acknowledged that it was someone in the crowd who yelled out to her, “move your feet” that got her to get it together, and pull out a match-winning 7-5 second set comeback! I swear, I had nothing to do with it! It was actually some guy who was sitting about five seats away from me.

When Bethany told Andrew, the stadium emcee who did the on court interview, that it was that guy’s “move your feet” that made her turn it around, I nearly fell off of my seat, since that seems to be my catch phrase out on the courts!

Behind the ESPN Desk

The ESPN television coverage began today. Here’s what being on camera looks like to Cliff Robertson and Mary Jo Fernandez. This was taken behind their broadcast desk. Nothing but bright lights in your face!

Eva Hrdinova and Vladimira Ulirova

Alright, I know that this picture is a little blurry, but the height difference in this doubles team was too funny not to point out. On the left is Eva Hrdinova, who is listed at (a conservative) 6’3″ . On the right is little Vladimira Ulirova who is listed at (a generous) 5’5″ . That’s a NINE inch “official” difference, that sure looks like at least a full foot!

Not only is Valimira closer to the camera in this shot (so, by perspective, she should look taller than normal), but Eva is hunching over just a little so that she can here the Czech communication.

They were playing Ai Sugiyama and Ayumi Morita (both 5’4″), from Japan, and it looked very funny out there. After they split the first two sets 4-6, 7-5, Hrdinova/Ulirova beat their opponents, making it to the semis, in a nail-biting third set 12-10 tie break.

I was afraid that if Eva had fallen down, the other three would have started shooting little thread ropes over her body to secure her to the ground!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 East West Bank Classic II

July 25th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Another fantastic day of exciting tennis here in Carson! Here are some pictures of Thursday’s action:

Sybille Bammer Forehand

Look at the forward momentum in the lefty forehand by the other mom on tour (other than Lindsey Davenport), Sybille Bammer. It looks as if she is going to fall down, but I assure you, her footwork kept her in the game, ready for the next return. She won a tough three setter over Anna Chakvetadze 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, and then had her little daughter out on the court afterward.

Samantha Stosur Bag Check

Here’s Samantha Stosur, who made it to the doubles semis with her partner Lisa Raymond. She is being recorded for the “Bag Check” segment for the Tennis Channel. Not only did she feature her watch, but also had a football with the name/logo of one of the home teams in her country of Australia. Watch for it soon, but you heard it here first!

Goodyear Blimp at Carson Tennis Stadium

One of the cool things about this venue, is that it is right next door to the Goodyear blimp docking station. All day long the blimp is going up and down on the horizon. Here, in early evening, it buzzes by as Alla Kudryavtseva gets the best of a lopsided second set over Dinara Safina. Dinara came back in the third set and took the match 7-6, 0-6, 7-6.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 East West Bank Classic I

July 24th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

There is some great tennis going on now that you need to be a part of!

This week is the East West Bank Classic at The Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, USA. I don’t have internet access at the event, so I actually cannot be “Almost LIVE”, but have to come to you “Tape Delayed”. This is a great event and you get to be real close to the players, especially on the outer courts. Here are a few shots of today’s action on the outer courts:

Ai Sugyama Backhand

This is Ai Sugyama preparing for her backhand in her defeat of Patty Schnyder 6-4, 7-5. A terrific match that I saw from the front row on Court 4. That’s right, sitting right in the corner, on a step ten inches up from the court. This is how good the seats are here with only a Grounds Pass!

Nadia Petrova Backhand

And, talk about preparation, here’s Nadia Petrova getting ready to slam another backhand in her three set victory against Akgul Amanmuradova 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. Again, this picture is not taken from my professional digital SLR camera with a giant zoom lens. I have a new, very small, pocket digital camera just for these blogs that takes great pictures from the front row on Court 3.

Raymond Stosur Doubles

Out on Court 5 Samantha Stosur (on the left) is back with partner Lisa Raymond as they discuss strategies for their win over Sabine Lisicki and Nicole Vaidasova. What a killer team Raymond/Stosur are! Doubles at its finest. I was so close that I actually caught the game ball twice during the match! Really!! You cannot get any closer to the action than that, unless you are getting pounded into the court by these two dominating athletes. Raymond/Stosur won 6-3, 6-1.

If those names aren’t enough for you, how about other matches that I saw today featuring names such as Safina, Mirza, Bammer, Craybas, and Jankovic! The weather is great out there so what are you doing sitting in front of your computer? Use a sick day, take a mental heath day, cancel those appointments and get out there and see some great professional tennis closer than you can anywhere else for the price!

Here’s the link for the event, and feel free to call me on my secret cel number with any questions/tips. It may take me a little bit to get back with you ’cause I’ll be watching so much terrific tennis!:

BTW, coming up will be the Western & Southern Masters from Cincy, and the Countrywide Classic from Los Angeles.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Pacific Life Open X

March 21st, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Today’s shot is from inside the media room that overlooks Stadium Court. The picture makes it seem a lot smaller than it actually is.

The Press Room

It’s a long room full of little desk cubbies that each have a TV on top. Some have stats, some have the current action on court, and some have the live feed from the post game interview room (that we rarely get to see in our sport). It’s pretty quiet, save for the interview audio, and the sound of many fingers lightly typing on their laptops.

This will be my final “LIVE” report from this event as I will become a patron tomorrow, and shouldn’t be bringing my laptop beyond the gates. I hope that you have enjoyed my reports from the 2008 Pacific Life Open!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!
