2010 Western & Southern Women’s & Masters XI

August 19th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

Quarterfinal day is tomorrow, so, get your tickets now!

Today’s web-only exclusive is the transcription of the Q&A between Novak Djokovic and me at today’s press conference:

MARCUS TENNIS: In the tiebreak, it was obviously a lot hotter out there, and the conditions were a lot hotter than it was when you first started. Were you getting concerned about possibly going into the third set, in the heat, and that having an affect on your respiratory problem?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, it did have affect on both of us. We played a very intense second set, a lot of rallies and a lot of important moments. I was coming back from a 15-40 twice I think in 4-3 and 5-4, and then set points again in tiebreaker.
So, yeah, I mean, I was really mentally strong and calm when I needed to be. That was the key, I guess, in the second set.

The final scores for the matches I mentioned are:

Julian Knowle / Andy Ram
d. Tommy Rebredo / Radek Stepanek 6-7(3), 6-1 [10-8}

Mardy Fish d. Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-2

Novak Djokovic d. David Nalbandian 6-1, 7-6(7)

Andy Roddick d. Robin Soderling 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-6(5)

Bob Bryan / Mike Bryan
d. Julien Benneteau / Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-2

2010 Western & Southern Women’s & Masters X

August 18th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s an unbelievable line-up today at the Western & Southern Financial Group masters in Cincinnati. Wednesday’s schedule features the top four players in the World in action on Center Court, while the day session on Grandstand includes an American in every match.

As a bonus, only on the website, here is the transcription of the Q&A between John Isner and me at yesterday’s press conference:

MARCUS TENNIS: Your success at Wimbledon obviously brought you international fame, but, speaking just from tennis fans in America, now that Andy Roddick has dropped a little out of the top 10, do you feel a lot of pressure on yourself, that a lot of the people are looking at you and Sam Querrey as the next guys to make it into the top 10 for the U.S.?

JOHN ISNER: No, I don’t think so. I think it’s only a matter of time before Andy gets back in there. Because really from this point on last year he didn’t play much. He didn’t do that well to the Open for his standards, and after that he was hurt.
So he can only go up from here. So I think without a doubt, assuming he stays healthy, he’s gonna be back in the top 10 at year’s end. Most likely, he has the best chance to be the highest ranked American at the end of the year.
But I don’t feel any pressure. If I don’t get to the top 10, I’m only letting myself down really. That’s the way I look at it. It is what it is. I’m just gonna go out there and play and try to win.

The final scores for the matches I mentioned are:

Mardy Fish d. Fernando 7-6(1), 7-6(4)

Nikolay Davydenko d. Robby Genepri 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-2

Roger Federer d. Denis Istomin 5-2 (retired)

Frantisek Cermak / Michal Mertinak
d. Daniel Nestor / Nenad Zimonic 7-5, 6-2

2010 Western & Southern Women’s & Masters IX

August 17th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s the third day of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters. There’s a full schedule on the courts all day long! Early rounds are the best!

Here is the transcription of the Q&A, that I mentioned in the video, between Roger Federer and me at the press conference:

MARCUS TENNIS: “You’ve dominated for so long, and raised the bar in the game. A lot of other players now have raised their games because of that. What do you need to do to still be up at No. 1?”

ROGER FEDERER: “Just a lot of hard work, you know. I’ve always questioned myself in the best of times, and also when it wasn’t going so well. Thank God there was not many bad times, you know, the last seven, eight years. They’ve always been very, very good.
I’ve always been in the top 2 or 3 in the word; 3 last week; now I’m back to 2. But I’ve always been very high in the rankings. That means you’ve also been doing some good things. So there’s no need to panic. I was able to work on many things in my game, and that’s really what’s most important.
And that players improve or adjust or they adapt and they have nothing to lose against you, that’s something that, you know, is hard to control sometimes. That’s how our game is being played, especially in best of three sets. Sometimes a bit of a shootout.
Can’t win them all. I always knew that, so I was very shocked and surprised at how dominant I was, and how well I played for so many years. And, still today, I’m hanging with the top, and I’ve got chances, and already won a slam again this year. I have a chance to win a second one, and maybe the World Championships at the end of the year.
There’s still a lot to play for. But usually if you stay the same, you will move down. That’s never something I was content with.”

The final scores for the matches I mentioned are:

Richard Gasquet d. Mikail Youzhny 2-6, 6-4, 6-1

Lleyton Hewitt d. Yen-Sun Lu 6-4, 4-0 (retired)
