January 27th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s time for the drawing and prize package results!

Congratulations to the winners! They will also be notified via email, and contacted for their mailing addresses.

Since I do most of my promoting on the tennis courts in Southern California, that is where the greatest percentage of subscribers and, therefore, winners are from.
However, as you heard, there were winners from outside of SoCal, and this year, for the first time, a winner from outside of the United States!

Thanks for all of the entries and your email comments. Be sure to share GroundsPass.net with your other Tennis Friends using the social networking buttons, below.

Subscribe for FREE to this site, my Twitter feed, and/or friend me on FaceBook.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2012 USTA Fall League IV

December 15th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

Being a part of a USTA League team, you are sometimes called up to fill in for a player who could not make it to their scheduled match. This was the case in this report.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: My USTA League reports are time delayed in favor of the daily and/or more timely reports promoting other events. This match actually took place during the second week of October.

For this USTA Fall League season, each team must field three doubles matches. The other two matches, that our team played that day, were over by the time our first set was completed.

Our first set lasted 41 minutes.
Our second set lasted 30 minutes.

My results, so far, for this season are:

Local District/Area 4.0 Doubles
0-wins, 4-losses

2012 La Habra Open II

December 8th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

Here’s the continuation of my post from one of my local tennis venues that had its 25th annual USTA sanctioned Open event. What follows is my comprehensive press coverage, as well as my video report, from the final day of the event known as the La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

TOP SEEDS FALL LIKE SEASONAL LEAVES

By Marcus Tennis

LA HABRA, CA., (Nov. 25, 2012) – The cool morning temperatures soon faded as the courts heated up at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships. Now in its twenty-fifth year, this tournament has been a regular event for top college players who have come home for the Thanksgiving holiday, or, have a few days off from school, and can’t resist the urge to compete.

The men’s Open semifinals began at 10:00am on the two main showcase courts, and could not have offered any better entertainment for the small, but mighty, crowd.

Number three seeded Javier Pulgar, a SDSU student from Spain, had his hands full with USTA Futures veteran Tim Kpulun, of Sierra Leon. At the end of a very tightly contested first set, Pulgar would pull away with a 7-5 squeaker.

Sierra Leon’s Tim Kpulun serves during a semifinal match in the Men’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

Kpulun was not deterred, as he continued to run Pulgar around the court with drop shots, deep lobs, and wide angles. The first game of the second set lasted over eight minutes! Pulgar would continue to defend his ground, mixing up his own game, enough to take the second set 6-4, and move into the championship round.

West Covina’s Ernesto Escobedo had his work cut out for him in the other semifinal. The sixteen year old, who last year won the boy’s 14s at the Easter Bowl National Championships, was up against the number one seed, Dennis Novikov.

Escobedo nearly took the first set from Novikov, a SoCal transplant, born in Russia, who won his first Grand Slam singles and doubles matches at this year’s U.S. Open. Escobedo was up 6-5, but, Novikov was able to bring it to a tiebreak, where he out gunned the stand-out junior to win the first set.

The second set was a strong one for Escobedo. He was able to stem the tide of Novikov’s momentum, stay solid, and pull out a 6-3 win over last year’s runner-up.

In the third, and deciding set, much like his quarterfinal match yesterday, Novikov was able to turn on the heat when it came down to the wire. He blasted through the flailing Escobedo to take the third set, and his spot in the championship round against Javier Pulgar, 6-1.

The women’s Open championship round followed, featuring Anaheim’s Elizabeth Ferris, the number one seed, against last year’s runner-up, Japan’s Rio Kitagawa.

Elizabeth Ferris goes for the backhand shot during the championship match in the Women’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

Ferris came out solid, but not necessarily strong, versus Kitagawa’s aggressive play. Most of the time Kitagawa was a little too aggressive, as her unforced errors allowed Ferris to even the score over and over again. A few of the points became an exchange of offensive and defensive lobs. High kicking top spin lobs threw both players back against the fence a couple of times, as they were running out of court to chase them down. Ultimately, it was Kitagawa who was able to stabilize her game and take the first set, 6-3.

By the time the second set rolled around, Ferris never made enough adjustments for the comfortable game plan that Kitagawa had settled into. “I was playing better than yesterday. I started better, so I could finish easier”, recalled Kitagawa, who confidently finished the second set, 6-3.

A strong backhand was one of the keys in Rio Kitagawa’s championship win in the Women’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

Winning the championship, after being a runner-up last year, was a breakthrough for the Ojai resident, “I didn’t play a lot of tournaments this year, but, I think my mental (game) is getting better. Because I don’t play a lot, I have to think about (my game) more. I guess my mental is tougher than last year.”

Her mental toughness will be tested right away, as she leaves tomorrow, for a clay court Pro Circuit Futures event in Antalya-Kaya-Belek,Turkey.

Javier Pulgar won the the Men’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

The much anticipated men’s Open singles championship match was, apparently, not to be this year. Finalist Dennis Novikov defaulted his final match, due to illness, leaving Javier Pulgar to pick up the championship title and prize money, without playing a championship point. “It’s too bad that we didn’t have a final, but, I’m happy about the money!”, exclaimed a somewhat jubilant Pulgar.

Here is my video report featuring highlights and interviews from Sunday’s event:

Because I limit the duration of my programs, I did not cover either of the Men’s Open Singles semifinal matches, in lieu of the championship round. Unfortunately, after winning his semifinal, Dennis Novikov did not make it to the championship round, because of the official reason of: illness.

The results for the matches that I featured in the video report are:

WOMEN’S OPEN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Rio Kitagawa d. Elizabeth Ferris 6-3, 6-3

MIXED OPEN DOUBLES SEMIFIANL
Amit Inbar / Bianca Aboubakare
d. Ryan Stotland / Natalia Toporowska 6-3, 6-3

Out of respect for Tennis Friend Amit Inbar’s fiancee, I would like clarify that when he mentioned that he and his tennis partner, Bianca, “live together”, he meant that they are roommates 🙂

MIXED OPEN DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Amit Inbar / Bianca Aboubakare
d. Jonathan Sanchez / Bettina Radke (walkover – withdrawal)

MEN’S OPEN SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
Javier Pulgar d. Dennis Novikov (walkover – illness)

2012 La Habra Open

December 1st, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

Last weekend, one of my local tennis venues had its 25th annual USTA sanctioned Open event. What follows is my comprehensive press coverage, as well as my video report, from the second weekend of the event known as the La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

SUMMER WEATHER IN THE FALL
BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN TOP PLAYERS

By Marcus Tennis

LA HABRA, CA., (Nov. 24, 2012) – With temps in the mid 80s, who would have guessed that this would be a late November tournament? Now in its 25th year, the La Habra Open Tennis Championships once again drew some of the top college players into the Open division, and many of the leading Southern California players into the NTRP ranked division. “We just keep improving each year,” observed tournament director Dave Nowick, “This year we went up about forty entries, and added the age groups. That was a big deal!”

The men’s Open quarterfinals began at noon on the main showcase courts.

Number one seeded Dennis Novikov, out of Boca Raton, Florida, went up against local favorite Derek Siddiqui, of Cypress, in a repeat of last year’s semifinal match-up. Novikov, a sophomore at UCLA, struggled a bit in the first set, as he was trying to adjust to matchplay, after being out for weeks with an injury. “I was injured for a month. I sprained my ankle pretty severely”, explained Novikov, “I’m just trying to get in more matches now.” Siddiqui was able to take the first set, with a confident, 6-3.

UCLA team member Dennis Novikov, makes effective use of his backhand during a quarterfinal match in the Men’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

In the second set, Novikov kicked it up on the San Diego State senior, as he dominated that round, 6-0.

The third set wasn’t looking much different for Siddiqui, as Novikov busted out with a 4-0 lead. Siddiqui was able to get back in the match, and win a few games. By then, it was much too late as Novikov took the match with a third set score of 6-4. “I’m returning back to form right now. I started playing better, feeling my shots better.” commented Novikov, “Every match, for me, is just better and better.”

Southern California native, and Las Vegas resident, Brian Battistone brought his unique volleyball-style serve to his quarterfinal match against a Spaniard from San Diego State, Javier Pulgar. The unseeded Battistone, who won an Open tournament here in the Southland just last month, struggled to get his game together in the first set, losing it, 6-3.

#3 seed, Javier Pulgar, whacks a forehand down the line during a quarterfinal match, in the Men’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

For the second set, the number three seeded Pulgar, turned the power all the way up, and took out the veteran Battistone with a drastically uneven 6-0. “He’s not a very common player to play in these kind of tournaments, but, it went my way today” reflected Pulgar. When asked about returning the volleyball serve, he added, “The return is one of the best parts of my game. I returned my best today, and I think that was the biggest part of the match today.”

The two other men’s Open quarterfinal rounds featured Fullerton resident Tim Kpulun’s ousting of Irvine’s J. Nicholas, 6-4, 6-2, while sixteen year old Ernesto Escobedo, from West Covina, battled in a tough three set win over recent Rancho Bernardo High School graduate Tyler Pham, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

In women’s Open semifinal action, a repeat match-up of last year’s championship round was played out, with the returning champion, Jelena Durisic, defending against returning runner-up, Rio Kitagawa. Durisic, a Serbian who graduated from University of North Carolina last year, was on her game in the first set, blasting through with a 6-2 win.

The second set was a near turn-around. Kitagawa, who trains at the Weil Academy in Ojai, stayed solid as the number two seeded Durisic’s game started to fall apart. Down 5-1, Durisic began making inroads against the number five seed. Winning the next four games, despite facing a handful of set points, wasn’t easy for Durisic, and it wasn’t enough, either. Kitagawa was able to regain her momentum after the 5-5 tie, and take the set, 7-5.

Durisic seemed frustrated, in the third set, by Kitagawa’s consistency. That, and maybe her own loose play and unforced errors. Kitagawa fought hard to avenge last year’s defeat, by taking the third, and deciding set, 6-1. “I was trying to play aggressive the first set, but, I was missing like crazy.” said Kitagawa, “The second set, I was trying to play more steady, you know, tough. I just keep calm, and play my tennis.”

The other women’s Open semifinal featured sixteen year old Jasmin Jebawy, from Glendale, Arizona, taking on the number one seed, Elizabeth Ferris of Anaheim.

Elizabeth Ferris keeps her concentration during a semifinal match, in the Women’s Open division at the 2012 La Habra Open Tennis Championships.

Ferris, not only had ten years on Jebawy, but the University of Utah graduate had a more powerful game, and skills to go with her experience. Dismissing the young German, 6-2, 6-1, Ferris had no bones about the age gap, “I’m in my prime! I play a lot of players that are ten years younger than me, eight years younger than me, I’m doing great!”
Playing a local tournament is a welcome change from traveling on the Pro Circuit, “It’s great! I don’t get to play many tournaments where it’s close to home and I get to sleep in my own bed.”

At press time, there were still many matches that had not even started, as some of the doubles, and mixed doubles, featuring top Orange County players, were scheduled for evening start times.

Here is my video report featuring highlights and interviews from Saturday’s event:

CORRECTIONS:
In my interview with Rio Kitagawa, she referenced the duration of last year’s match-up. We both guessed that it was two sets. It was, in fact, three sets, with a final result of:
Jelena Durisic d. Rio Kitagawa 6-3, 2-6, 6-4

Also, the mixed doubles match that I featured was a quarterfinal, not a semifinal, as I had mentioned in the voice over. On the graphics, I typoed an extra “o” to Micheline Aubuchon’s last name, as well.

The results for the matches that I featured in the video report are:

MEN’S OPEN SINGLES QUARTERFINAL
Javier Pulgar d. Brian Battistone 6-3, 6-0

WOMEN’S OPEN SINGLES SEMIFINAL
Rio Kitagawa d. Jelena Durisic 6-3, 2-6, 6-4

MIXED OPEN DOUBLES QUARTERFINAL
Jonathan Sanchez / Bettina Radke
d. Marcos Santos / Micheline Aubuchon 6-0, 6-1
