2013 BNP Paribas Open III

March 8th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!
So far, I have not been featuring too many things “Outside The Lines” . . . I had better get back to my own theme here . . .

Potential Round of 16 Match Preview:

Ekaterina Makarova is currently ranked #19, and has 1 WTA Tour singles title. Last year was her first year end Top 20 season.

Lucie Safarova is currently ranked #18, and has 4 WTA Tour singles titles.
Last year was her first year end Top 20 season, as well.

They’ve only played against each other once, four years ago, and Safarova won that match 6-2, 6-2. If they meet up in the Round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Open, it should be a very close match!

2013 BNP Paribas Open II

March 7th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!
The women’s main draw has started, so, I figured that I would cover some of the ladies in today’s report:

The results for the matches that I featured are:

Olga Govortsova d. Mandy Minella 6-2, 3-6, 6-4
Despite the 29 point difference in their rankings (#67-Govortsova, #96-Minella), this was a pretty even match-up. I had seen Govortsova play doubles before (she owns 8 WTA doubles titles), but, I had never heard of Minella. Both of these players have been on the tour for about seven years!

Lourdes Dominguez Lino d. Grace Min 1-6, 6-4, 6-3
After a strong first set by Min, Dominguez Lino was able to make adjustments. Both plater had called for their coaches a couple of times. This was a great showing for 18 year old Min, but, the extensive experience of the 31 year old veteran, Dominguez Lino, was the key.

2013 BNP Paribas Open

March 6th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!
I’m starting my daily reports on the second day of qualifying for the women’s event, and the first day of qualifying for the men’s.

The results for the matches that I featured are:

Michael Russell d. Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 7-6(5)
After dominating the first set, Russell got a little unnerved as Kunitsyn began getting a handle on his style of play. Kunitsyn has reached as high as #35, but, is currently ranked #162, to Russell’s #70 ranking. Russell was able to do what he does best, feed from the crowd and keep his focus, in order to pull out the win.

Ernests Gulbis d. C Harrison 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4
Christian is only 18 years old, and got a wildcard into the qualifying. In his impressive debut at the BNP Paribas Open, he saved three match points in the third set, but, ultimately lost due to the greater tour experience of Gulbis.

2012 USTA Fall League V

February 2nd, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s a new season here at GroundsPass.net, but, because of the holiday hiatus, I still have a few reports to share from last year. This one continues my documentation of my USTA Fall League season.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: My USTA League reports are time delayed in favor of the daily and/or more timely reports promoting other events. This match actually took place during the second week of October.

We were up 8-7 in the first set tiebreak, and Javier was serving it out, but, unfortunately, we lost the next three points.

Our first set lasted 52 minutes.
Our second set lasted 32 minutes.

My results, so far, for this season are:

Local District/Area 4.0 Doubles
0-wins, 5-losses
