2011 WTT: Newport Beach Breakers

July 7th, 2011

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s time for World Team Tennis!
I visited my local team, the Newport Beach Breakers, to catch this year’s action. It was a home game, held at The Tennis Club Newport Beach, as they took on the St Louis Aces.

The are five “events”, as they call them, featuring mixed doubles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, and men’s singles. That’s a lot of action to pack into just a couple of hours!

I’ve put together some highlights of the evening, along with an interview with Billie Jean King!

There are so many details and other exciting things to share, so, it looks like I’ll have to go back for this Saturday’s match! Be sure to join me, as the Breakers feature Pete Sampras versus Martina Hingis and the New York Sportimes!
Upcoming matches, in the next couple of weeks only, feature Taylor Dent, the Bryan brothers, and some of the best current and former tour players!

Go to the official Newport Beach Breakers website for the rest of the home schedule and to get your tickets here: newportbeachbreakers.com
Be sure to tell ’em that you saw them on GroundsPass.net!

Or, look for YOUR local team
on the official World Team Tennis website here: wtt.com

2011 USTA Spring League V

July 2nd, 2011

Hey Tennis Friends!

This was the final match that I played for the team during the Spring League season. Unfortunately, I had some difficulties for the opening of this video:

This time our first set lasted around 21 minutes, and the second set was around 23 minutes!

My final results for this season were:

Local District/Area 4.0 Adult Men Doubles
2-3

Not a winning season for me, but our team ended up right in the middle of the eleven teams in our area. There was some tough competition, with one team going undefeated all season!

Be sure to share GroundsPass.net with your other Tennis Friends, and I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

Tennis Tip: Hydration – Replay

June 25th, 2011

While I am preparing my reports for the summer hardcourt season, please allow me to “Replay the Point” on a relevant tennis tip that I have previously posted:

Hey Tennis Friends!

No matter whether it’s the hot summers, or the cold winters, it’s very important to stay hydrated out there on the courts!

Now, I’m not a doctor, or a trainer, but here’s some of my advice on drinking and playing:

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2011 US Open National Playoffs

June 18th, 2011

Hey Tennis Friends!

The US Open National Playoffs took place this week at The Claremont Club in Claremont, California. This is the Southern California section of the summer-long contest.
I stopped by on semi-final day to file this report:

The semis were held on two courts, but, I could only get a good camera angle on center court. Because the men’s match that I covered went to three sets, they moved the third match of the day (mixed doubles) over to the “non-camera-friendly” court, so I did not get coverage of any mixed doubles.

The scores for the semi-finals were:

Men’s Singles
Cecil Mamiit d. (#1 seed) Luis Perez 6-2, 4-6, 6-2
Jeffrey Tarango d. Alexander Reichel 6-3, 6-4

Women’s Singles
(#1 seed) Amanda Fink d. Alyssa Smith 7-5, 6-2
(#2 seed) Macall Harkins d. Kristina Smith 7-5, 6-2

Mixed Doubles
Patricia Tarabini / Jeffrey Tarango
d. Wendy Caragher/ Marco Zuniga 6-3, 6-2

Kaitlyn Christian / Chris Kearney
d. Chico Bonner / Tiffany Mai 6-2, 6-0

Here are the scores for the finals, whose winners will be moving on to the national level of this competition:

Men’s Singles
Cecil Mamiit d. Jeffrey Tarango 6-4, 6-3

Women’s Singles
(2) Macall Harkins d. (1) Amanda Fink 6-4, 7-5
Tennis Friend Patrick Alog posted an interview with Macall before the semi-final round. Read it here:
Q & A with US OPEN Hopeful Macall Harkins

Mixed Doubles
Patricia Tarabini / Jeffrey Tarango
d. Kaitlyn Christian / Chris Kearney 7-6, 6-2
