2012 WTT: OC Breakers II

July 14th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

One of the things that I enjoy about Word Team Tennis and the Orange County Breakers, is the opportunity to be introduced to players on the tour that I may never have heard of.

In this featured match, the OC Breakers took on the Kansas City Explorers, who had no “featured” players, but, had plenty of excitement in their gameplay!

The WTT season will be over before you know it. The next match is tonight, Saturday, July 14th, so don’t miss out!

July is here, and so is the World Team Tennis season! The former Newport Beach Breakers have changed their venue and become the Orange County Breakers.

In this featured match, the OC Breakers took on last year’s undefeated WTT champions, the Washington Kastles, featuring Coach Murphy Jensen, and doubles specialist Leander Paes:

2012 USTA SoCal Jr Sectionals

June 30th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

Last weekend, in order to feature more junior tennis on my site, I stopped by the 110th Annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships, presented by Farmers Classic, at the Los Caballeros Racquet & Sports Club in Fountain Valley, California.
This tournament is HUGE! They had boy’s and girl’s singles and doubles in age divisions for the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s, and 18s! As usual, there was so much going on that I couldn’t have possibly included everything that was happening in this video report. This is why I always encourage you to get out to these events, to choose for yourself the matches that you want to watch!

CORRECTION:
I misspoke when interviewing Alyza Benotto. She had, obviously, played three sets, not two.

The results for the matches that I featured in this video report are:

BOY’S 18 SINGLES Round of 16 (with seedings)
(1)Gage Brymer d. Stefan Menichella 6-2, 7-6

Gage Brymer lost in the next (quarterfinal) round, to the ninth seeded Robbie Bellamy, from Pacific Palisades. Bellamy made it to the final round where he met up with another Tennis Friend, Ernesto Escobedo, who won the boys 14 singles at the 2011 Easter Bowl. Bellamy beat Escobedo in a tough three-setter 6-7(1), 7-6(8), 7-5.
However, Brymer did not go home empty handed from this tournament. In boy’s 18 doubles, he teamed up with Dieton Baughman (they were the #3 seeds) to defeat the same Robbie Bellamy, and Gregory Garcia (the #1 seeds), in the championship 2-6, 6-3, 6-3

GIRL’S 18 SINGLES Round of 16 (with seedings)
(1)Alyza Benotto d. Meredith Xepoleas 1-6, 6-4, 6-3

GIRL’S 18 SINGLES Quarterfinal
(2) Maegan Manasse d. Dorothy Tang 3-6, 6-3, 6-2

Maegan Manasse’s win put her in the semifinal round, where she was bested by the number four seed, Ashley Dai 7-5, 6-2.
Alyza Benotto made it through to the final round where she was also bested by the Temple City resident, Ashley Dai 6-4, 6-0.

2012 USTA Spring League V

June 23rd, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

Originally, my Tennis Friend, Jerry, and I had planned to play at least seven matches together. Because of our different scheduling conflicts, things did not always work out the way we had planned . . .

For this USTA Spring League season, each team must field three doubles teams and two singles teams.

Our first set lasted 33 minutes.
Our second set lasted 29 minutes.
David and I did fairly well, considering it was only the second time that we had ever played together, plus, we played in the #1 position against the top team in our area. Our match outlasted most of the other team matches that day. We finished after our team’s two singles, and one other doubles match. We were able to cheer on the last match of the day, which was a doubles match that went three sets!

In the time following this match, my regular partner, Jerry, and I had been diligently practicing together. We usually do pretty well playing social tennis and, quite frankly, were a little embarrassed about our results in USTA League play. We made an extra effort in the past few weeks to work out some new strategies. Unfortunately, our final match of the season was defaulted, as our captain could not get enough players to field a complete enough team. Not how we wanted to end our season . . .

My final results for this season are:

Local District/Area 4.0 Doubles
1-win, 4-losses

2012 US Open National Playoffs

June 16th, 2012

Hey Tennis Friends!

The US Open National Qualifying Playoffs took place this week at The Claremont Club in Claremont, California. This is the Southern California section of the summer-long contest.
I stopped by on finals day to file this report:

CORRECTION:
Alyssa Smith was not a finalist, but a semifinalist in last year’s tournament.

Fortunately, tournament director Annette Buck scheduled all the final matches for center court. This allowed me to get great coverage of this event.

On a side note, Tennis Friend (and Australian Open junior doubles champ) Gabby Andrews was the number two seed for this event, held at her home club. Unfortunately, she had to withdraw because of a wrist injury.

Here are the scores for the finals, whose winners will be moving on to the national level of this competition:

Men’s Singles
Dante Cipulli d. Jeffrey Tarango 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
For the past four years, Cipulli was an assistant tennis coach at University of Missouri-Kansas City. He now is a tennis pro and junior tennis coach at Murrietta Tennis Club.

Women’s Singles
(#1 seed) Mayo Hibi d. Alyssa Smith 6-3, 6-1
This past year, Hibi has been traveling on the ITF Circuit and currently holds a career high WTA Tour ranking of #646.

Mixed Doubles
West Nott / Alison Ramos
d. Page Bartelt / Scott Doerner 4-6, 6-4, [10-8]

More information on the U.S. Open National Playoffs:
The winner of each Sectional Qualifying Tournament in each division (men’s singles, women’s singles, mixed doubles) will advance to the US Open National Playoffs Championships in their respective division taking place in New Haven, CT at Yale University during the New Haven Open at Yale, a WTA event, part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series (August 17-20 for singles, August 22-25 for mixed doubles). The winner of each Singles Championship (1 male, 1 female) will receive a wild card entry to compete in the 2012 US Open Qualifying Tournament (August 21-24) and the winner of the Mixed Doubles Championship (1 team) will receive a wild card entry to compete in the 2012 US Open Mixed Doubles Championship (commencing August 29) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
