2008 National Mixed Championships III

November 23rd, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

I’m back at the Gold River Racquet Club for semi-finals and finals day.

Veronica Getting Taped

Here is one of the Sacramento State students taping up the ankle of semi-finalist player Veronica. Believe it, or not, this service was complimentary! What great practice for the students, and fantastic support (pun intended) for the players.

Gold River Racquet Club Center Court

This was the scene on Center Court. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much information on the players, but I think that the guy in the far court, with the white shorts, is one of this club’s pros. His team won this match, and he was very gracious when I walked up to congratulate him. It certainly was an exciting match to watch!

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 National Mixed Championships I

November 21st, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s time for a trip to the Northern California Section for “Nationals”.

Here are a couple of pictures from inside the main clubhouse.

Gold River Racquet Club Clubhouse

There were plenty of players her for this event. Not only did they have the Davis Cup on the big screen on the right, but they also had their own sandwich shop, which is the lighted counter to the left.

Gold River Racquet Club Clubhouse

Despite what it may look like from these pictures, this was a huge indoor hang out. In this reverse angle shot, you can see the fireplace, vaulted ceiling, and the patio windows where you can view center court.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2008 Countrywide Classic III

August 8th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Ever wonder how they create the computer simulation for the “Hawk-Eye” replay challenge system? One of the elements is the camera.

Hawk-Eye Camera

There are eight of them strategically positioned around the court. Through powerful computers and software, they are able to triangulate the ball’s position as it moves quickly around the court. Next time you come out to an event that uses the challenge system, look for something that looks like the photo above, then try to find all the other seven.

The Countrywide Classic Draw Board

There is usually a lot of people standing in front of the draw board, but, for a brief moment in time between matches, I was able to capture a photo between passersby. It’s quarterfinal day today, so most of the grid is filled up.

Sometimes, you can even get your shot on national TV:
