2010 USTA Intl Spring Champs

April 10th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

This week the 2010 USTA International Spring Championships are being held at the Home Depot Center in Carson. I stopped by late in the week to check out the juniors, and the future of tennis . . .

As usual, there was so much more going on than I was able to cover. There were boy’s and girl’s 16s matches going on, as well as the 18s. It was good to see some of the juniors that you may have heard their names buzzing around, such as Madison Keys and Krista Hardebeck.

Watching the #1 seed Raymond Sarmiento take on the #16 seed Emmett Egger was an exciting match.

Watching that girl’s doubles match was captivating, especially once I found out who the players actually were, and that Lacey Smyth and Sabrina Santamaria had bageled the #1 seeded team of Lauren Herring and Grace Min in the first set! What a treat! And what a great comeback!

Later in the afternoon, American Raymond Sarmiento teamed up with Darian King, from Barbados (the #1 Boy’s 18’s Doubles seeds), to play against Americans Rickey Baylon and Dennis Mkrtchian.

There were times during the boy’s match when even though the line call from the chair umpire was in their favor, at separate times, each team had overruled the chair, giving their opponents the point, in the sprit of fairness. That kind of sportsmanship was fantastic to witness at this high level of play for anyone, and especially the, wrongly perceived, “less mature”, juniors!
It took three tough sets for the #1 seeds to win that match: 4-6, 7-5, (10-7).

It’s fun to come to these events to see the “buzzed about” players, and go away being fans of some of the new faces in the future of tennis.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2010 USTA Mixed Doubles X

April 3rd, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

As the mixed doubles season is finishing up, this was my last match for my Local District 7.0 team.

As the final results for this team show, Roxanne and I had an undefeated season as a team!
I attribute it to our matching outfits, the match we won by default, and . . .
oh, yeah, . . . good communication and teamwork. I’m glad that our extra efforts paid off!

My results this season, so far:

Local District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0, or less) 1-3
Local District/Area 7.0 Team
(with partner rated 3.0) 3-0
Adjacent District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0) 1-3

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2010 USTA Mixed Doubles IX

March 27th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

Sometimes foreshadowing is a good thing, . . . sometimes, not so much . . .

In hindsight, I cannot believe that in the pre-match interview I asked Inger if she ” . . . hadn’t broken any bones, or anything . . .” and if she was totally healthy and ready for our match!

The video of the play where Inger got injured was pretty uneventful, so I didn’t bother to show it. The score was tied at 4-4, and I was serving 40-15. During the point, she had strained and sprained her back going for her shot. Unfortunately we lost that point. Afterward we chose to retire from the match, rather than risk any permanent injury.
As I told my partner, right then on the court, her health and well being is more important that a league match!

My results this season, so far:

Local District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0, or less) 1-3
Local District/Area 7.0 Team
(with partner rated 3.0) 2-0
Adjacent District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0) 1-3

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2010 USTA Mixed Doubles VIII

March 20th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

After taking time off, and bowing out of a few league matches to rest my broken toe, I am ready to play again!

My toe is still healing, and it does hurt, however, I no longer limp around the court between points. The injury isn’t affecting my gameplay anymore, thank goodness.

In the video I said that it was my first 8.0 win. What I meant, is that it was the first 8.0 win for this particular Local District/Area 8.0 Team this season. It was a good feeling, after three straight losses to start the season.

My results this season, so far:

Local District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0, or less) 1-3
Local District/Area 7.0 Team
(with partner rated 3.0) 2-0
Adjacent District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0) 1-2

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2010 USTA Mixed Doubles VII

March 13th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

Sometimes, the game of tennis can be unpredictable,
even before the match starts . . .

It’s never fun to show up prepared and not get to play tennis, however, since my broken toe is still healing, any time away from the action on the court is welcome. It had been a full week since my injury, and I played only once, the day before this current match, to see if I felt capable.

Fortunately, we got the win, and with more time off court for my injury.

My results this season, so far:

Local District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0, or less) 0-3
Local District/Area 7.0 Team
(with partner rated 3.0) 2-0
Adjacent District/Area 8.0 Team
(with partner rated 4.0) 1-2

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!
