2010 WTT: Newport Beach Breakers

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s time for World Team Tennis!
I visited my local team, the Newport Beach Breakers, to find out what it’s all about. It was a home game, held at The Tennis Club Newport Beach, as they took on the Kansas City Explorers.

The were five “events”, as they call them, featuring mixed doubles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles, women’s singles, and men’s singles. That’s a lot of action to pack into just a couple of hours!

There are so many details and other exciting things to share, so, it looks like I’ll have to go back! Be sure to join me, as they have matches coming up in the next couple of weeks only, that also feature Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova, and even John McEnroe!

Go to the official Newport Beach Breakers website for the rest of the home schedule and get your tickets here: newportbeachbreakers.com

Or, look for YOUR local team
on the official World Team Tennis website here: wtt.com

Be sure to share GroundsPass.net with your other Tennis Friends, and I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!

2010 Farmers Classic Preview

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

While getting ready for the summer pro tennis season here in Southern California, I stopped by the LA Tennis Center to get a preview of the Farmers Classic!

Be sure to go to the official event website for your tickets, and also check out the other discounts and special entry days such as, Kids Day, Book Day, and USTA Member Appreciation Day.

Get your info and tickets here: farmersclassic.com

My thanks to Michael Chang, who just just happened to be at the LA Tennis Center as part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Camp. The camps are, ” . . . a time of ‘inspiration and perspiration’ for athletes and coaches to reach their potential by offering comprehensive athletic, spiritual and leadership training.”

2008 Countrywide Classic II

Friday, August 8th, 2008

Hey Tennis Friends!

Here’s today’s video clip:

One of the cool things about this year’s event is that the Tennis Legends Tour is being played here simultaneously. It’s a great chance to see the former pros compete, and many still at a high level. Yesterday evening there was an autograph signing for this guy:

John McEnroe Autograph Signing

Yep, that’s John McEnroe doing his best to be friendly! Last night, he took to the court against Mikael Pernfors of Sweden. For fans like me, who have discovered tennis after McEnroe’s era, it’s a real treat to get to see him play again.

John McEnroe Serving

Here’s a shot of his lefty serve. It looks quite different from the arching back severs that I have pointed out on other posts on this site. He played well, and there were a couple of outbursts that almost made it seem like professional wrestling. McEnroe beat Pernfors 6-3, 7-6.

Today I had an insightful conversation with one of the recognizable (from TV) linesmen. Unfortunately, they aren’t allowed to do “official” interviews, so I wasn’t able to get any of the comments on camera. Suffice to say, it seems like a pretty enjoyable job, and it involves world travel. The linespeople are independent contractors, and can choose to work with either the ATP or the WTA, or both.

I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!
