2013 Southern California Open

Monday, July 29th, 2013

Hey Tennis Friends!

It’s the first day of the main draw at the Southern California Open! I hope to see even more Tennis Friends here this week, after running into quite a few when I was shooting my preview report.

CORRECTIONS: What I meant to say was that Kuznetsova was a FINALIST at the US Open and Roland Garros twice. She actually only won each one of those once.

Also, Flavia Pennetta only made the doubles FINAL in 2005, she did not win that championship.
(Sometimes, I don’t even read my own voice over script properly . . . )

Women’s Singles
Francesca Schiavone d. Flavia Pennetta 7-6(4), 6-7(6), 6-4
Pennetta’s doubles partners for her Grand Slam wins were Elena Demetieva for the 2005 US Open, and Gisela Dulko for the 2011 Australian Open. Schiavone, who won in on clay in Marrakech this year, partnered with Casey Dellacqua to win the French Open doubles in 2008.

Virginie Razzano d. Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2, 6-4
As Virginie said in her interview, she was granted a wildcard for this event. That was a great win for her, being that Svetlana is ranked #29 and Virginie is ranked #131. By the way, just before interview with Virginie, Sam Stosur, who won earlier today, walked by. For a brief moment, we discussed how great we all looked wearing our ASICS apparel. Unfortunately, it is frowned upon to take pictures when you are reporting, so, I have no proof of my story, but, you can ask Virginie about it!

Jelena Jankovic d. Mallory Burdette 4-6, 6-1, 6-4
This was the first meeting of these two, and Burdette made a good showing against the former World #1. Jankovic, a long time member of the Serbian Olympic team, won the mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2007 with partner Jaime Murray. She also won the singles of the US Open in 2008.
