The first semifinal was quite a see-saw match, considering how lopsided the second set was. Things evened out in the third set and Kristyna Pliskova rolled ahead to win in a third set tiebreak: 7-3.
Kristyna Pliskova d. Lauren Albanese 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(3)
The second semifinal was a spectacular comeback match!
Ashley Weinhold struggled with Karolina Pliskova’s serve and went down 4-1 in the first set. The Texas native fought back and won five games in a row to take the set! In the second set, Weinhold once again fell behind 4-0 before winning six consecutive games to clinch a spot in the final.
Ashley Weinhold d. Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-4
After suitable rest, the Pliskova twins won the doubles championship by besting the team of Nadejda Guskova & Sandra Zaniewska: 6-7(6), 6-1, [10-5]
In the Sunday final, Weinhold, who beat Kristyna Pliskova the previous week at Rancho Sante Fe in the first round, breezed through the first set before struggling with the 6-foot Czech’s serve in the second. Pliskova continued serving well in the third and went up a break but, in her come-from-behind style, Weinhold took advantage of her quickness to rally back.
Ashley Weinhold d. Kristyna Pliskova 6-3, 3-6, 7-5
