Hey Tennis Friends!
It’s my third day of coverage at the Carlsbad Classic!
This WTA Tour event is being held the week of Thanksgiving without any breaks. That means regular matches on Thanksgiving Day, but bring your own refreshments, including food, as there will be NO CONCESSIONS on Thanksgiving Day ONLY. Be sure to dress in layers for the cool fall weather, and check out this video:
Here are the results for the matches that I featured:
SECOND ROUND SINGLES (with seedings):
(2) Tatjana Maria d. Francoise Abanda 6-4, 6- 3
Tatjana Maria is the former Tatjana Malik. In 2013 she married her coach, fellow tennis player Charles Edouard Maria. Their first child, a daughter named Charlotte, was born at the end of that year. After a short break from the WTA Tour, Tatjana Maria returned to competition in April 2014.
Samantha Crawford d. (4) Naomi Broady 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4
To be fair, Broady actually won the “Ace Race by serving up a total of 9 aces, to Crawford’s 8.
What a difference a few years make, though. I first featured Sam Crawford back when she and partner Allie Kiick won the USTA Girl’s 18s National Hardcourts back in 2012. Still as tall and joyful as ever, it’s always fun to reconnect with the juniors who have turned pro, especially when they pull out such a fantastic win! Here’s a look back to highlights and the interview from the past:
2012 USTA Girls’ 16s & 18s Nationals
What a great time to come on out and watch some exciting pro tennis!
