2010 USTA Pro Circuit – Claremont, CA

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Hey Tennis Friends!

The USTA Pro Circuit made its annual stop in Claremont, California, for a Futures event.
I was there to file this report:

In the first semifinal, it wasn’t looking to good for the American, Devin Britton. He was down 0-3 after the first few games. He changed up his serve and volley game, started playing more points from the baseline, and won the next six games in a row to take the first set!

These two 19-year-olds met in the qualifying final of a Futures event a couple of months ago in Malaysia, with Singh winning in three sets. “He is playing a lot better,” said Singh, who is enrolled at the University of Illinois and will be eligible to play for the Illini in January. “I didn’t make too many errors today.”

Devin Britton defeated Karunuday Singh 6-3, 6-3

The second semifinal was very competitive in the first set. Gary Sacks saved a set point down when he was down 6-5 in the first-set tiebreaker. He went on to beat the No. 4 seeded Gilad Ben Zvi of Israel, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

In the Sunday final, Gary Sacks may not have been totally confident about his one-set, 5-0 lead against Devin Britton. The last time he held a big lead against Britton was back in February at the Brownsville, Texas, Futures event. “I was up a set and 5-2 and had match points,” said Sacks. “I let him back in and he won the match. So up a set and at 5-2 today I was thinking, ‘You better finish this.’ “
Gary Sacks won the tournament by defeating Devin Britton, 7-6 (8), 6-2!

Tournament director Barry Friedman said it was the first time in the tournament’s history that a qualifier had gotten even as far as the semifinals, let alone win the entire tournament.
