Hey Tennis Friends!
During my second day of emceeing the finals weekend of the 2010 Easter Bowl National Spring Championships, I was able to get more footage of these future tennis stars, as well as a few interviews.
Here is my report from Day Two of the finals:
It was another great day promising young Americans fighting their way to the top!
A special thanks to tournament director, and chairman, Brian Fineberg, for allowing me to report on this tournament in addition to his television coverage.
Here are the results of the matches that I featured:
Girls’s 16s Singles Final
(#1 seed) Kyle McPhillips def. (#2 seed) Brooke Austin 7-6 (4), 6-4
Two years ago, at the 2008 Easter Bowl, Kyle was a finalist in the Girls’ 14s. Brooke won the Girl’s 14s last year.
Boy’s 18s Singles Final
(Unseeded) Bjorn Fratangelo def. (#4 seed) Nick Chappell 7-6 (1), 6-3
As I had mentioned in the interview, Bjorn is only 16, yet he won the Boys 18s championship as an unseeded player!
Boy’s 16s Singles Final
(#10 seed) Gordon Watson def. (#1 seed) Nolan Paige 6-3, 6-1
This was the biggest win of Gordon’s career, and an amazing comeback story.
He was once the number one 14-and-under player in the U.S., but contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite at a tournament in Gerogia. He was out for a year and a half recovering from the disease, and many people thought that he would never make it back to tennis.
At this tournament, he won his fourth career USTA Gold Ball trophy!
I’ll see you next time, with more tennis, . . . outside the lines!
